MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. Preps Exclusive New 7-inch

Hitting shelves of independent record stores around the world tomorrow (9/22) is MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.’s exclusive new Rider.Shadow.Wolf. 7″ that finds the band introducing a surf-rock dynamic into its signature punch. The track is the standout among the plethora of cuts recorded during the same productive session that gave us the band’s most recent longplayer, Josephine. On “Rider.Shadow.Wolf.,” Molina’s tired rider, just having battled the desert, now meets the eternity of the ocean.

Also found on the limited 7″ is a stripped-down, early take of “Josephine.” This particular recording of “Josephine” was laid down just after the song’s inception, during the session that will later be released as a collaborative album from Molina and Will Johnson of Centro-matic. This version features Molina, Johnson and Magnolia jack-of-all-trades Michael Kapinus on keys, and serves as a preview of what’s to come in the arc of Molina’s career. Keep an eye out for more news on the Molina/Johnson collaboration coming very soon.

Meanwhile, a documentary filmed during the making of Magnolia Electric Co.’s Josephine LP called Recording Josephine has appeared on venerable music site Pitchfork Media as a One Week Only feature. The documentary offers some intimate and often hilarious peeks into the band’s time at Steve Albini’s Electical Audio Studios. Of special note is lead guitarist Jason Groth fulfilling a lifelong dream by way of absolutely nailing a saxophone solo in the studio. Watch the video by going HERE before the features ends Friday. Fun fact: The intro to the video features the tune “Rider.Shadow.Wolf.”

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. To Be SIRIUS-XM Artist In Residence For August

Throughout the month of August, MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. will serve as “The Roots in Residence” on Sirius/XM radio’s “The Loft,” for whom the band just delivered a stunning in-studio set. Each Sunday at 6 p.m., the band’s appearance on “Your Roots Are Showing” will run i full. Tune in and enjoy!

Kind words from the folks at Sirius: “On the day of (new album Josephine’s) release, Magnolia Electric Co. came into The Loft and recorded their session. We won’t lie, lives were changed, spectators danced and at least one person cried a little (and admitted it). Be prepared for Your Roots Are Showing to transform into a honky-tonk in a ghost town as Magnolia Electric Co. serves as The Roots In Residence. We might as well order drinks and keep the tab open because once Magnolia Electric Co starts to play, you won’t be able to go anywhere.”

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.’S Josephine LP Released Today, Live Session With WOXY Available Online

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.’S latest longplayer Josephine is a mature, personal album, a meditation on real loss and real dislocation. And as of today, it is available in both CD and vinyl formats at your local, independent record store – and of course, for mail order purchase HERE. Of Josephine, Filter magazine had these fine words to say: “Sparse but somehow inherently hopeful tunes about solitude and loss are (Jason Molina’s) forte, and Josephine…is another act in refining that craft…stripped down buts adds new elements like horn sections and sax solos that who Molina can improvise on what he already does so well.”

Magnolia Electric Co. is currently on a coast-to-coast tour with San Diego’s The Donkeys, making a lot pit stops at radio stations along the way. A recent live session for Cincinatti’s WOXY, a fine recording for the stations Lounge Acts feature which can he downloaded at the WOXY site HERE.

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. Featured On NPR’s Song Of The Day

Our good friends at NPR are currently loving MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.’s latest longplayer Josephine (released July 21), most recently featuring a fine tune from the album as NPR’s Song of the Day. In the post, NPR said of lead electrician Jason Molina’s songwriting prowess: “His repetition of themes and imagery never comes off as lazy; it’s creating a new kind of format for the blues, like haiku or cinquain or something.”

And they had these fine words to say regarding featured track “Whip-poor-will”: “It helps that “Whip-poor-will” is as achingly pretty and strangely catchy as anything Molina has written with Magnolia Electric Co. Propelled by a slide-guitar line that’s somehow both sunny and sad, “Whip-poor-will” finds Molina’s sad-sack narrator feeling small and looking helplessly skyward: “So all of you folks in heaven not too busy ringin’ the bell / Some of us down here ain’t doin’ very well.” Of course, that’s a bit of a poetic understatement right there: Molina and pain make an inseparable pair. Fortunately, beauty is always hanging out nearby.”
