GARDENS & VILLA

Gardens & Villa is the project of five college friends from Santa Barbara, formed following the collapse of a noisier post-punk band and a hitch-hiking journey up the west coast. Members Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop began playing in earnest as Gardens & Villa in 2008. The name is pulled from the location of their house on Villa Street, and the property's lovely garden to which they tend. The music they make is very much connected to coastal city they call home -- the stoney bike rides, dance parties, a scene free of judgment. For two weeks in the summer of 2010, the band camped behind visionary and now-labelmate Richard Swift's Oregon studio. No shower, no kitchen, but all the magic you could ask for. After taking a band oath to always play all parts live -- a la Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense -- the band added member Dusty Ineman to supremely execute the live incarnation of the band.

Two fantastic bands are pairing up for a fall tour and they just happen to be Gardens and Villa and Mom + Pop’s latest signee, Polica. To celebrate, Gardens and Villa have taken on Polica’s “The Maker,” offering a splendid, dance-worthy remix. It’s impossible to listen to this track and not dream up thoughts of how great this tour is going to be. You’ll be moving from start to finish. Stream “The Maker” below!

In addition to dates with Polica, Gardens & Villa make stops at Musicfest NW, KBZT’s Independence Jam (where they’ll share the bill with Fiona Apple), Counterpoint Festival in Atlanta and Austin City Limits in October. See full list of dates at end of post! Read the rest of this entry »

LSTN: Gardens & Villa Cover Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy”

Today, Paste Magazine premiered Gardens & Villa’s new cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy” and it is fantastic. Slowed down and infused with the sounds we’ve come to know G&V for, “Gypsy” deserves a good listen or five. Throw this one on at your next summer BBQ or late night hang and you’re bound to be the coolest cat at the party. The original track appeared on 1983′s Mirage, while the cover is for the compilation Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute To Fleetwood Mac, set for release in August. Antony, The Kills, Lykke Li, MGMT, Washed Out and Best Coast are just a handful of other artists who are on the covers album. Find out more HERE.

Listen to “Gypsy” at Paste Magazine.

“When we were approached to record a version of ‘Gypsy’ for the compilation we were all for it, as most of the guys in the band have an intimate connection with the music of Fleetwood Mac. It’s sensitive and timeless. It was a beautiful experience. We’re really thankful for this opportunity.” – Adam Rasmussen

Gardens & Villa Compose Film Score & Set to Play at Coachella? It’s True!

Gardens & Villa is the gift that keeps on giving. Just when we thought we’d have to wait for the EP to hear anything new from Santa Barara’s loveliest gang, G&V throws us a bone. And believe me, it’s a pretty cool bone. As part of the 27th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the boys are composing an original film score to F.W. Murnau’s silent film, “Faust.” G & V will perform the music live on February 4th at Lobero Theatre. The event is co-presented by the New Noise Music Foundation and falls under the festival’s new Cinesonic facet. You can get your tickets HERE.

In other awesome news, GARDENS & VILLA ARE PLAYING THIS YEAR’S COACHELLA. Please try to contain your excitement; it’s been extremely difficult to do so over here. You can see them on both weekends of the festival. Checkout the LINEUP.
