WATCH // Secretly Canadian Welcomes Whitney To The Family, Shares Video For “No Woman”

Secretly Canadian and Lead Riders have teamed up to present vital new music from exciting newcomers Whitney who are offering a first glimpse of whats to come in 2016 with No Woman. In spite of its own lost soul whistfulness, there’s something immediately comforting and simple at the core of “No Woman,” the latest sonic missive from Chicago’s Whitney. It’s as soothing to your musical memory as the first two bars of The Chordette’s “Mr. Sandman.” It’s as unfettering and wind-through-your-hair of America’s “Pacific Coast Highway” albeit here in an edible-induced cruise control.

Drummer/vocalist Julien Ehrlich‘s (ex-Unknown Mortal Orchestra) naked, soft-edged falsetto charmingly guides us through this breakup bender amid subdued strings and velveteen horn section bursts: “I left drinkin’ on the city train to spend some time on the road/Then one morning I woke up in LA, caught my breath on the coast/I’ve been going through a change/I might never be sure/I’m just walking in a haze/I’m not ready to turn.”

With writing partnership of Ehrlich and Max Kakacek (guitar, ex-Smith Westerns), Whitney has given us an anthem for moseying on and forgiving yourself of your many fumbles. Julien explains, “NoWoman started to take shape when I woke up on a friends floor one morning. He was taking a shower and the chorus popped into my head while I was grabbing my stuff to go home. Later on Max and I sat down and wrote the chords and song structure in our apartment. Its about losing the love of your life and being thrown into an aimless journey because of it. This is a feeling that pervades the collection of songs the band has written and recorded over the last year, and has prepped for later in 2016.

Accompanying the single release is an evocative new video direct by Hugh Donkin. It provides a charming portrait of one of 2016s most promising new bands.

The Academy Awards have announced the 2015 Oscar Nominees, and were delighted to share J. Ralph and Antony have been nominated for Best Original Song for Manta Ray from Racing Extinction.

“The songwriter Josh Ralph asked me to write a track that he did for a film by the people that made The Cove, and I was a fan of the film The Cove. I felt lucky to be doing something on this subject matter, because it’s one that is close to my heart. He showed me some footage from the film, and I thought it was quite provocative…”Anohni

WATCH // Damien Jurado Shares Video For “Exit 353″

“[An] evocative journey for the singer, who uses the song to pose a question that answers itself: ‘Are we all not lost in song?'” – NPR Music

“Jurado worked once again with producer and regular collaborator Richard Swift, and new single Exit 353″ has the sort of rambling 70s vibes weve come to expect from him. Also, I promise, its fully possible to enjoy it without knowing the albums backstory.” – Stereogum

“Its a blurred, reverberating expanse of sound, once again proving how successfully Jurado has transitionedthrough genres, reaching a point where it all comes together in one powerful, evocative track.” – Consequence of Sound

Today, Damien Jurado shares the cinematic video for “Exit 353,” the first single off his new (and 12th!) studio album, Visions of Us on the Land, out 3/18 on Secretly Canadian. Visions is the third and final entry in the cosmic trilogy that began with Maraqopa in 2012 and followed by Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son in 2014. The video was directed by Elise Tyler, who had this to say about the concept:

Damien has a strong history of cinematic music videos, so I felt very free to explore narrative andimage with Exit 353. I was inspired by the haunting landscapes of the Pacific Northwest; it is aperfect backdrop for Damien’s music, which clearly originates from the towering pine trees, densefog, and winding hills of the region. We explored the area and created a world where two seeminglyvulnerable young women are more powerful than one may think. In my mind, Damien is on theverge of leaving this world and disappearing into anonymity. He is pulled back momentarily by theseyoung women who perhaps need his help- but he quickly realized that he should have never beenseduced back into society, that he was and is alone among men.

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Damien Jurado Announces ‘Visions Of Us On The Land’

damien

Providing the ideal entry point for neophytes and an intoxicating aural high for the faithful, Damien Jurado’s new opus extends the hot streak ignited by 2012s Maraqopa and its 2014 follow-up Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son. Cut once again with label mate and super producer Richard Swift at the latters National Freedom recording facility in rural Oregon, Visions of Us On The Land, out 3/18 on Secretly Canadian, completes the tale of an individual who has had to disappear from society in order to discover some universal truths. Today, we’re excited to share the song “Exit 353,” premiered by NPR Music.

There was no grand scheme to make a trilogy at the outset. Exuberantly prolific, its creator simply wanted the first record to be “a quick snapshot,” says Jurado. “Maraqopa is this peaceful place I can go to in my mind. A little bit psychedelic, but youre not using substances. The brain is such a powerful thing. In that uncharted territory I was able to tap in and find this place. Which was called Maraqopa. Similar to the fictional towns in television or books.

Maraqopa the album introduced a character deliberately unnamed, intended to represent anyone feeling that way who stumbles upon the titular locale then gets into a car crash… which only frees him further. Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son. It picked up the narrative after the accident, in a commune inhabited by Silver Timothy, Silver Donna, and Silver Malcolm. Visions of Us On The Land journeys further into the subconscious mind, a symbolic road trip spotlighting the people and towns that our central figure and his travelling companion, Silver Katherine, encounter upon leaving the commune. Hence the capitalized track titles, alluding to real American locations refracted through ones third eye in the rear view mirror. Like all great art, its about life and death and love and freedom. A sonic map with no set destination, revealing more with each ride.
