If you tuned into Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, it’s likely you saw John Cale perform “I Wanna Talk 2 U.” Did you notice a couple of familiar faces in his band? How about The War On Drugs’ Dave Hartley (Nightlands / Oak Island) and Robbie Bennett? We would not lie to you – see it for yourself above! Jump ahead to around 36 minutes to watch the musical performance!
Dave Hartley is a man of many things. You’ve come to know him as the bassist in The War On Drugs and leader of Nightlands – a gentle giant and sci-fi fanatic. Today, we recognize him as the great basketball whisperer. Perhaps we gave you a preview of this when we highlighted Dave’s work for IMPOSE. We are only solidifying his love for the game now. WXPN just announced Dave will head up their new sports column, Top Of The Key. Don’t believe us? Check out that awesome photo of Dave strong arming Baron Davis. GO DAVE!
“To put it bluntly, Hartley is a basketball freak with a encyclopedic knowledge of the game.” – WXPN
(you better believe it)
Back to the point. Dave’s first column is now up for your reading pleasure. He so kindly spells out why Andrew Bynum’s injury is not an end-all for the 76er’s. Read the column HERE.
Dave Hartley of Nightlands brings you the second single off his sophomore release, Oak Island! Premiering yesterday, “I Fell In Love With A Feeling” goes right along with Dave’s sci-fi adventure. “I’m playing with aesthetics and looking for new modes of expression. So in that way my albums are at their core sci-fi novellas, broader-than-usual soundscapes coming from both sides of my brain.” Listen to the track above! Learn more about the album from Dave himself – interview up now at the Wired.
Don’t wait to secure your copy of the new album! Oak Island is now available for pre-order at SC Distribution. The pre-order features a deluxe bundle in which you receive Oak Island on CD or vinyl, a copy of “All The Way” b/w “Buggin’ Out” 7″, 11×17″ Nightlands poster and a digital download of the entire album.

It came as no surprise when we asked Nightlands’ Dave Hartley to curate a Spotify playlist for us, he chose to center his creation around The Beach Boys. In describing the list, Dave shares, “The Beach Boys are much more than the just Pet Sounds and Surf-Car-Girl party songs. Here are twelve strange and beautiful songs that came after.” Perhaps this is a side to the boys we’ve yet to truly take notice. Each of the 12 songs were chosen for good reason and Dave tells you why >>> you’ll find both the descriptions and playlist below. Enjoy! Read the rest of this entry »
