HERE WE GO MAGIC

The elastic pop songs of Here We Go Magic are like a musical approximate to the kinetic, carefully balanced mobiles of sculptor Alexander Calder. There is an immediate weightlessness and elegance to the movement of the pieces that belie the delicate, toiling construction at play, the everything in it's right place of the design, the undeniable dedication to craft, the elbow grease, just how fussed over these pieces most certainly are. And more simply, like Calder's mobiles, the songs seem to float just above us, in a space that feels just out of our terrestrial reach. And though HWGM's new album Be Small finds the band taking a, well, smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes -- from the live, expansive sound of 2012's A Different Ship, produced by Radiohead's 6th man Nigel Godrich, to Be Small's direct-to-board home-recorded album -- it hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and a singular sonic ambition.

Here We Go Magic‘s fourth studio album, Be Small, finds the band taking a smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes, but hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and a singular sonic ambition. Recorded and mixed entirely by the band, Be Small‘s songs are a big leap from the live, expansive sounds of 2012’s Nigel Godrich-produced A Different Ship. Its an album of robust future pop that still continues its route through Here We Go Magic‘s inimitable path of fidgety prog-rock, blissful melodies and sound collage experimentations, but always with a focus on a deep groove. You can hear how these songs likely began as Luke Temple’s bedroom folk riffs, but where they ultimately end up is near transcendent and celestial. Today, the band is sharing the more contemplative and restrained Ordinary Feeling, a slow, swooning burn, and an equally fulfilling taste of Be Small following upbeat debut single, “Falling.

Here We Go Magic’s Be Small is out October 16th on Secretly Canadian, and available for pre-order now. All digital pre-orders come with instant free downloads of Falling” and “Ordinary Feeling.” Catch the band all over North America this fall.

WATCH // Here We Go Magic Announces ‘Be Small,’ Shares Video For “Falling”, Summer Tour Dates

SC315-HWGM-FC-HR-1425
Here We Go Magic return with Be Small, an album that finds the band taking a smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes, but hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and singular sonic ambition. Recorded and mixed entirely by the band and inspired by Brian Eno and John Cales Wrong Way Up and Robert Wyatts Shleep, Be Smalls overtly major and optimistic” songs, as described by band leader Luke Temple, are a big leap from the live, expansive sounds of 2012’s Nigel Godrich-produced A Different Ship. Its an album of robust future pop that still continues its route through Here We Go Magics inimitable path of fidgety prog-rock, blissful melodies and sound collage experimentations, but always with a focus on a deep groove.

Debut single and pulsating album standout, “Falling,” builds upon arpeggiated, satellite signal synths and joyous, interlocked acoustic strums and fuzzed guitar. It gathers momentum with each phrase about falling in love (though it’s unclear if this is a thing to be celebrated or dreaded) until the whole affair suddenly halts into a nothingness that sounds like a Gregorian chant from the bottom of a wishing well. Watch the video below for the debut single, directed by Sam Kuhn.
